Practical Life, The Foundation
By learning to care for their homes, gardens, themselves, and their guests, children are introduced to the world and how to find their place in it. The four sub-divisions of Practical Life include:
- Care of the Environment
- Care of the Person
- Social Relations
- Analysis and Control of Movement
Sensorial Area
Through experience with materials, a child learns to arrive at clear abstractions. Sensorial Materials develop familiarity and recall of impressions – including weight, color, texture, form, size, sound, and smoothness/roughness.
Math
Through mathematics, children learn how to communicate exactly and precisely. In addition to preparation for math in Practical Life and Sensorial Areas, children are introduced to numbers, the decimal system, counting, memorization, passage to abstractions, and fractions.
Language
Exercises in this area focus on the four elements of language: sounds, words, sentences, and grammatical forms. The goal is to help the child not just read, but to experience “total reading” – including comprehension, emotion, and style.
Cultural Subjects
Geography is the science of the Earth and its life. Education at Wichita Montessori School provides the children with the opportunity to develop a constructive and creative understanding of the universe and their place in it. In addition to our Montessori curriculum, students are instructed in French, Spanish, art, music, physical education, and science.
